Soccer is the most popular sport in the world.  We're the world's largest Catholic fraternal society.  It is only fitting that soccer and the Knights of Columbus have teamed up.  The Supreme Council is proud to announce a new youth program, the Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge.

Designed for players to demonstrate the most basic of soccer skills - - the penalty kick - - the Soccer Challenge will be open toall boys and girls in your community, ages 10-14.

The Soccer Challenge is one in which the soccer goal is divided into a series of five scoring zones, with a point value given to each section.  After the participant is given 15 penalty kicks, his or her total number of points will be awarded depending upon the scoring zones that were hit.

The contest will take place on the council, district, regional, state, and international levels.

The recommended time frame for the Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge is:
Council Championship – September
District Championship – October

There will be NO Chapter contest and ALL District winners will be eligible for the State competition.
If there is only one Council participating in a District, that Council is eligible for State.

The third annual Knights of Columbus California State Soccer Shootout Contest was held on Sunday, November 11, 2007 at Sunny Side Park in Tulare. There were a total of eight competitors representing various Councils, Districts and Chapters. Following are the results of the shootout:

Girls Competition:

11 year old division 1st Place Daija Tillman 190 points

12 year old division 1st Place Jazmine A. Burk 140 points

14 year old division 1st Place Krisstal LeCavalier 205 points

Boys Competition:

10 year old division 1st Place Matias Martinez 165 points

13 year old division 1st Place Luis Alvarez 135 points

2nd Place Favian Vidales 130 points

14 year old division 1st Place Ivan Lopez 235 points

The competitors took the competition very seriously and tried their best to improve prior scores. First place winners become eligible for Supreme Council awards based upon their point total. Special thanks go to Br. Arthur Cabello, Sr., Chairman, and his group of willing volunteers. They did a magnificent job setting up and coordinating the event.

With only 8 contestants at the State competition there is obviously room for this program to grow. All Councils, Districts and Chapters in California are encouraged to appoint chairmen and schedule contests early in the 2008-2009 Columbian Year. The State shoot-off typically occurs in November in order to meet Supreme deadlines. Let’s see a hundred or more kids competing at the State level next year! First and foremost, it is up to the local Council to schedule competitions and get the ball rolling. Be proactive and invest in our Youth!

Yours in Charity and Service,

David E. Williams, Youth Activities Director
